1 Corinthians 12:30 30Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

I was always under the impression when Paul spoke these words he was
saying that not all speak with tongues.
I believe we all are offered all the gifts, including the gift of healing and prophesying, but not all use them, or they just leave them wrapped up and
never open the presents, so to speak. I believe that Paul is saying here that
not everyone has the gift of healing or of tongues or of interpretation.
In Chapter 12 vs 4-6, Paul says
4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
This speaks to me that everyone is given the same gifts, but not all of us
are empowered to use them all. If there is a need for tongues and interpretation
of tongues the Holy Spirit gives utterance and allows it to be for edification of
the person who is speaking it or for edification of the church, or for His glory.

The tongues from what I understand are for edification and help for the person
who is speaking, not for the church, and Paul says that if there is no interpreter
they should either be silent or pray in a low tone, so as not to let others hear.
Because if someone comes in who is unlearned they might be frightened and
never come back or think that they were all crazy.

Prophesy on the other hand is for edification of the church and is always permitted
and if there's an interpreter present, and someone comes in and hears you speak
in tongues, then they hear it being interpreted, or a word of knowledge or discernment
is given afterward, they would be more likely to want to stay and hear more.

This happened to me once. I was attending a pentacost revival meeting and this lady came up to me speaking in an unknown tongue. I sat there dumbfounded, not knowing whether to run or what was going on. This was the first time I ever heard it. Immediately after this another woman came and stood in front of me and told me that I was going to have a son, my firstborn, and he would be pulled from my arms, and that he was going to be a mighty prayer warrier for the Lord. (I was only about 15 at the time) When I was 23 I had my first child, a boy. I named him Jordan, and two weeks later he was taken from my arms and I was put in a hospital, while I was there my aunt and uncle took him. They raised him really well and he's now 25 and has his master's degree and is a very devout Christian who is on fire for the Lord and I believe what she told me is true.

God's hand has been on Him since the day he was born, and he's been able to
do so much as an adult. His first house was paid for by the tiime he was just
19! And He's always lived debt free. I guess I'm a little proud, but I have to say
the lady who said those words over me when I was 15 had to have been the
real thing.

One question that I have is this tongue a language that is universal in that if people from another language hear it they understand? Or is an "unknown language" that no one but God understands?
I take it from Acts that this was a language that was understood by all who heard it IN their own language or tongue, and not an "unknown" language.
Paul spoke many different languages, and was a very well educated man, so he spoke with tongues more than anyone else there, right?
To me the "tongues" is where God gives utterance to men to speak in a language that's known by someone in the assembly in order to give them what they need for edification in their own language. God knows our minds and our hearts and when we pray believing as touching any thing we don't even have to speak, he already knows what we need before we ask, but isn't this where the prayer tongue comes in? That's what always baffles me. What is the purpose of an " unknown tongue" ?

also we must remember the bible says
RO 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are WITHOUT REPENTANCE.
It takes the genuine holy ghost filled to bring forth jesus true works. Jesus used a rooster to get peter's attention for example but that rooster was not saved. God uses people in songs but thats their gift and most have a worldly entertainment and no true deep down holy ghost. God gives us good gifts and uses us in them..but salvation depends on whether we have the key to God's kingdom in Acts 2:38..that Jesus gave peter in Matthew 16. God bless..Sister Mattie

Amen God uses many things..the tongue is one of them..He used the tongues in Acts 2:38 to manifest his spirit through his obedient servants.
****************
I Corinthians 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

I like that in verse 30..PAUL Said through the power of the holy ghost..FORBID NOT TO SPEAK IN TONGUES. IN mark 16..you find that tongues are a sign that follows the believers. There is the gift of tongues used to prophecy, in tongues and interpretation, and the tongues God brought forth on the day of pentecost as a sign that we have the genuine holy ghost. God Bless..sister Mattie

Thanks Bro Russ, He definitely speaks to us through his servants and that was so profound a message she brought to me, and it was meant for me only. I feel so blessed that God chose me to give birth to such a man as my son. I know that God has an awesome plan for all my children's lives but this one is special and he's been chosen to do something great for the Lord, we still don't know what it is, but he's been in training for a while now and has passed a lot of tests, and has his master's degree. The way he started out if it had been left all up to me to raise him he might not have gotten nearly as far, and I thank God for my aunt and uncle who brought him up in the admonition of the Lord.
