1 Corinthians 12:30
30Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
I was always under the impression when Paul spoke these words he was
saying that not all speak with tongues.
I believe we all are offered all the gifts, including the gift of healing and prophesying, but not all use them, or they just leave them wrapped up and
never open the presents, so to speak. I believe that Paul is saying here that
not everyone has the gift of healing or of tongues or of interpretation.
In Chapter 12 vs 4-6, Paul says
4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
This speaks to me that everyone is given the same gifts, but not all of us
are empowered to use them all. If there is a need for tongues and interpretation
of tongues the Holy Spirit gives utterance and allows it to be for edification of
the person who is speaking it or for edification of the church, or for His glory.
The tongues from what I understand are for edification and help for the person
who is speaking, not for the church, and Paul says that if there is no interpreter
they should either be silent or pray in a low tone, so as not to let others hear.
Because if someone comes in who is unlearned they might be frightened and
never come back or think that they were all crazy.
Prophesy on the other hand is for edification of the church and is always permitted
and if there's an interpreter present, and someone comes in and hears you speak
in tongues, then they hear it being interpreted, or a word of knowledge or discernment
is given afterward, they would be more likely to want to stay and hear more.
This happened to me once. I was attending a pentacost revival meeting and this lady came up to me speaking in an unknown tongue. I sat there dumbfounded, not knowing whether to run or what was going on. This was the first time I ever heard it. Immediately after this another woman came and stood in front of me and told me that I was going to have a son, my firstborn, and he would be pulled from my arms, and that he was going to be a mighty prayer warrier for the Lord. (I was only about 15 at the time) When I was 23 I had my first child, a boy. I named him Jordan, and two weeks later he was taken from my arms and I was put in a hospital, while I was there my aunt and uncle took him. They raised him really well and he's now 25 and has his master's degree and is a very devout Christian who is on fire for the Lord and I believe what she told me is true.
God's hand has been on Him since the day he was born, and he's been able to
do so much as an adult. His first house was paid for by the tiime he was just
19! And He's always lived debt free. I guess I'm a little proud, but I have to say
the lady who said those words over me when I was 15 had to have been the
real thing.
